Industry
What industry is your business in?
Why your score looks like this

Every one of these either adds to your sale price, or quietly subtracts from it.

Four areas decide the size of the check you walk away with when you sell, hand off, or step back.

01 / Owner and key-person dependency

Can it run without you?

It isn't only about you. If the knowledge lives in your head, or in the two or three people who've been there forever, that's key-person risk. A buyer is inheriting the risk of replacing them. The work is turning individual knowledge into institutional knowledge.

02 / Transferability

Is it written down?

Buyers need documented workflows, clear decision rights, and people who can run the work without you standing over them. If it's all in your head, it isn't transferable.

03 / Revenue quality

Will the money keep coming?

Two things move this. Customer concentration: if one client is a big share of revenue, losing them guts the business. And recurring revenue: contracts, retainers, and repeat customers are worth far more than one-time jobs, because a buyer can count on them continuing.

04 / Financial readiness

Are the books clean?

If a buyer can't clearly see what the business earns and spends, they slow down, get suspicious, or walk. Clean books are the price of being taken seriously.

Why now

The biggest business handoff in history is already underway.

Baby boomers own millions of the small businesses in this country. Over the next decade, most of them will try to sell, hand off, or close. Economists call it the silver tsunami, the largest transfer of business ownership we have ever seen.

10,000 Americans reach retirement age every single day.

Most of those businesses are not ready to sell. And a whole industry has noticed. Courses and "buy a retiring owner's business" trainings are everywhere now, and plenty of them are built to buy low from people who never got prepared.

I want you on the other side of that table. Prepared, holding the leverage, with a business that makes it through due diligence and out the other side, at a price that reflects what you actually built.

What to do with your score

Start where you are. Start now.

The gap is yours to close, and so is the upside. Here are three ways to take the next step toward a business that's built to transfer, one that can run, sell, and hand off without you.

Why I'm doing this

My grandfather ran a dump truck company in Houston for decades. Everything he knew lived in his head. When he was gone, the business couldn't run without him. It died with him.

I'm a CPA and former auditor turned business owner turned fractional COO. I've sat where you're sitting, and I've spent years getting what's in owners' heads out into systems the business can actually run on.

I'm not a broker. I'm not here to sell your business. I'm here because I know how hard we work, and we deserve to build something that outlasts us.

This is my mission now, done in honor of my grandfather. Build it to transfer, and when you're ready to leave on your terms, you should get paid for every bit of what you built.
